Frequently asked questions
Can data be recovered from a drive that won't turn on or is making noise?
Often, yes. A drive that won’t power on or is making unusual noises usually points to a physical fault rather than lost data – the files are usually still there, just inaccessible through normal means. The safest step is to stop using it immediately and have it assessed. Otherwise you could do further damage.
How long does data recovery typically take?
Depends what’s actually wrong. Straightforward cases, like recovering accidentally deleted files, can often be turned around quickly. More involved cases, (e.g. a physically damaged drive) take longer. It requires careful work rather than a quick fix. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe once we’ve assessed the drive. We usually beat people’s expectations.
Is deleted data actually recoverable?
Even if deleted; quite likely. Deleting a file usually just removes the “pointer” to it rather than the data itself, which is why acting quickly — and not saving new files to the same drive — gives the best chance of getting it back. The longer a drive keeps being used after deletion, the more likely that data gets overwritten.
What about data stored only in the cloud?
Firstly, if your data is in the cloud and you break your laptop you should be able to get your data back with a new/repaired laptop. It’s a different situation to hardware recovery. If your files were only ever in cloud storage rather than on the device itself, what’s recoverable depends on your provider’s own retention and backup policies, not on anything we can do at a hardware level. Happy to help you work out where your data actually lives and what your options are.
